The Ultimate Off-Road Caravan Pre-Travel Checklist: Don’t Leave Home Without It
Welcome to another Maverick Campers guide! Whether you’re gearing up for a massive expedition across the Outback or just slipping away for a quick weekend off-grid, safety always starts before you even turn the ignition.
As Ethan and Jack often remind us in our walkthrough videos, the secret to a flawless trip in your hybrid camper or offroad caravan is a rock-solid routine. Missing one small step can turn a dream holiday into a roadside headache. To help you hit the dirt with confidence, we’ve put together the ultimate caravan pre-travel checklist based on OEM standard procedures.

1. Interior (Before Moving)
Securing the inside of your off-road caravan prevents damage on those corrugated tracks.
- Ensure all windows and roof vents are fully closed and latched.
- Check that roof latches are secured, if your model has them.
- Clear off the benches and ensure nothing is left loose; store or secure all items.
- Keep all cupboards and drawers closed and locked.
- Make sure the fridge is secured, engaging the travel lock if applicable.
- Secure the TV, appliances, and any loose gear.
- Ensure the shower door and bathroom items are properly secured.
- Raise the electric bed if your caravan is equipped with one.
- Make sure internal doors are latched open or securely closed.
2. Utilities Disconnect
Don’t be the person dragging a hose through the caravan park!
- Disconnect the 240V power lead and store it away.
- Disconnect the mains water hose and store it.
- Disconnect the grey water hose and store it.
3. Gas & Fuel Safety
This is critical for your safety while traveling.
- Turn OFF all gas bottles.
- Ensure gas bottles are securely fastened.
- Check that jerry cans are secured properly.
- Turn off the water pump.
4. Exterior & Body
Protect your caravan’s exterior components from wind and debris.
- Verify that all hatch doors are locked.
- Fully retract and lock your awnings.
- Fold the steps up.
- Secure any external BBQ or accessories.
5. Wheels & Running Gear
Your connection to the road. Never skip this section of the caravan checklist.
- Torque the wheel nuts to 135 Nm.
- Check the tyre pressures, making sure to include the spare.
- Inspect all tyres for any damage and wear.
- Remove the wheel chocks.
6. Hitch & Coupling
- Double-checking your hitch could save your rig.
- Fully raise and secure the jockey wheel.
- Ensure the hitch is properly coupled and locked.
- Connect the safety chains correctly in a criss-cross pattern.
- Connect the emergency breakaway cable.
7. Electrical Systems
Ensure your vehicle and caravan are communicating.
- Securely connect the trailer plug.
- Ensure the electric brake system is connected.
8. Final Safety Check
The final walkaround before you hit the highway.
- Check that all lights are operational, including tail, brake, indicators, and reverse lights if fitted.
- Test the brake function.
- Release the handbrake.
- Ensure all doors are locked.
- Verify the surroundings are clear before moving.
