Litchfield to Darwin
Litchfield was our last stop before our final destination – Darwin. We spent two glorious days here experiencing the wonderful waterfalls!
The first night we stayed at Florence Falls campground which is well shaded by trees and each campsite has its own firepit. We spent the afternoon swimming at Florence Falls and Buley Rockhole. It was a Saturday and very busy at Florence Falls, so while it was beautiful we didn’t enjoy it as much as the quieter waterholes (like Maguk for example). We then moved to Buley Rockhole and loved it there – it wasn’t as crowded and we had fun moving from one rock pool to another, until we reached the two large pools at the bottom.
The next night we stayed at Wangi Falls campground. The site we had chosen was large enough for our van however it had a tight corner to get the van into the site (plus inconveniently placed bollards), so we had a lot of trouble! Unfortunately we hadn’t been able to tell this from the site map or photos provided on the website…something to keep in mind in future.
However once we were set up, we took the short walk to the kiosk at Wangi Falls to get a sandwich and ice-cream, then walked a little further to Wangi Falls – what a delight that was! It wasn’t too crowded despite being a Sunday and it was so large that there was ample space to swim. We used our pool noodles to relax and float over to the waterfall and enjoyed climbing into a small rockpool alongside the waterfall. Glorious!
The next morning we woke early and began our final drive to Darwin. We weren’t ready to leave and, despite all the swimming we had done, we wanted to swim some more! So we stopped for a dip at Berry Springs. What a beautiful place to have our last swim.
Our time in Darwin was short but sweet. We stayed at the Discovery Parks in Winnellie. They were so friendly and accommodating – they generously allowed us to leave our caravan there on the day we checked out until later in the afternoon. The amenities there were fantastic too – two swimming pools and a jumping pillow – plus a Banh Mi food truck twice a week!
We visited the Darwin Trailer Boat Club, the Mangrove Boardwalk and had a picnic at the East Point Reserve Playground. The rest of the time was spent cleaning the car and caravan before we returned home…there was red dust everywhere! On the outside only, thank goodness – this trip definitely put the caravan dust seals through their paces!
We thoroughly enjoyed our time travelling through the Red Centre from Adelaide to Darwin – the wild, rugged outback is such an amazing place to be! Being out in nature, enjoying the variety of wildlife, the gorgeous scenery of trees, rocky cliffs, waterholes – we were all in our happy place! We were sad to return home but left feeling blissful, relaxed and like our cups were full!
